['ændʒəluː], Maya, afroamerikanische Schriftstellerin, * Saint Louis (Missouri) 4. 4. 1928; seit 1981 Professor für Amerikanistik in Wake Forest (North Carolina). Ihre autobiographischen Werke vermitteln die Erfahrungen schwarzer Frauen, die sich durch Vorurteile und Ablehnung der Gesellschaft nicht entmutigen lassen und beharrlich um ihre Identität kämpfen. Angelou schrieb auch Gedichte, Theaterstücke, Filmskripte, Fernsehprogramme und arbeitete als Schauspielerin, Tänzerin, Regisseurin und Dozentin.
